Silly Season 2014 [Edition 3]

A third edition of this prediction feature, this time after Ferrari and Red Bull have formally confirmed their drivers for 2014.

Once again, my predictions were totally wide of the mark last time, so here are a third set for us all to look back on and laugh come the 2014 season opener.

Red Bull:

VETTEL and RICCIARDO are confirmed here, and should provide an interesting battle within the team next year. Vettel, I expect, will top this pair, but don't expect Ricciardo to take it lying down.

ALONSO is confirmed, but there is still an outside chance he could leave the team should he not want to face RÄIKKÖNEN. The Finn, of course, will have no issue with Alonso. He's not known as the Iceman for nothing.

HAMILTON and ROSBERG are both on multi-year contracts. Expect more of the same in 2014 with these two running at the sharp end, fairly equal for pace.

No formal announcements have been made here, but GROSJEAN's seat has never really been in doubt and word on the grapevine is that MALDONADO will be in the sister car. A shame for others still negotiating with them, in particular Nico Hülkenberg, but there it is.

Again, no formal announcements made, but BUTTON has been mentioned recently by Whitmarsh as a definite McLaren driver for 2014. A surprise to me – and much of the F1 world – was the booting out of his 2013 teammate Sergio Perez, seemingly in favour of Formula Renault 3.5 champion Kevin MAGNUSSEN. Fellow McLaren junior driver and runner-up in the same championship Stoffel Vandoorne seems likely to enter GP2 next year.

Force India:

Rumour has it that Adrian SUTIL will remain at Force India, while James CALADO has been increasingly seen during FP1 sessions since Monza and seems likely to take the sister car. I fear this will be the end of the road for di Resta.

SIROTKIN is surely guaranteed a seat here now. With openings further up the grid closing down fast, odds are Nico HÜLKENBERG will find himself staying with the Swiss team for another year.

Toro Rosso:

Well, the Red Bull academy rather wiped the floor with my earlier predictions! VERGNE gets another year in the Italian squad, alongside reigning GP3 champion Daniil KVYAT. That's one line-up I'd never have guessed, and am still sceptical about.

Another team I played it safe with before, only to find they were replacing Maldonado with MASSA once it was confirmed the Brazilian no longer had a Ferrari seat. BOTTAS at least stays put.

My earlier prediction of BIANCHI and CHILTON pairing up for a second year her seems, amazingly, to be accurate. Certainly, the team have signed Jules, and made all the right noises about Max. As we learned with Razia though, nothing is ever certain in F1.

PIC was signed on a multi-year contract, although Perez proved what little that means. However, I can't see Caterham getting rid of their lead driver after only one year. If they need another pay driver, odds are they will either promote ROSSI from GP2, or hold onto VAN DER GARDE. I'm hedging my bets here a little and I can easily see both getting roles in the team, Giedo as a race driver again while Alex has 2014 as the reserve.

So, summing up my third neck-on-the-line moment of this year's silly season:

Red Bull: VET/RIC

Ferrari: ALO/RAI

Mercedes: HAM/ROS

Lotus: GRO/MAL

McLaren: BUT/MAG

Force India: SUT/CAL

Sauber: HUL/SIR

Toro Rosso: VER/KVY

Williams: MAS/BOT

Marussia: BIA/CHI

Caterham: PIC/VDG
